Today I'm sharing anotherof my easy recipes for kids- frozen banana bites! These little bitesare made fromsimple healthy ingredients but they taste like a real treat, and would make a fantastic healthy snack, dessert, or even a fun breakfast idea!

I've also included a freeprintablerecipe sheet at the end of the post so your own child can try makingthese themselves - following a recipe from start to finish can feel like a real achievement for a child and can be a great confidence boost! Thisis anallergy friendly recipetoo, as it's dairy free, nut free and gluten free (do look at your oatspacketto check they aregluten free if you need to avoid gluten).

Frozen Banana Bites

Ingredients

  • ½ cup oats
  • ¼ cup desiccated coconut
  • 1 tbs sesame seeds
  • 3 or 4 bananas

Method

Before you begin, find a baking tray fits into your freezer. Coverthe baking tray with tinfoil or baking paper.

Measure the oats, coconut and sesame seeds into a bowl and mix well.

Peel thebananas and cut them into bite sized pieces. A quick note on knives here - I allow six year old Small Child to use a small sharp knife under close supervision. I believe that teaching your child to use a knife safely is preferable to keeping them away from the altogether, but it really does depend on the individual child - use your judgement to decide whether your child is ready to use a knife. With this recipe, a blunt butter knife will also work just fine on banana.

Dip each piece of banana into the oats and turn until well coated in the oat mixture. Place on the baking tray and repeat until all the banana pieces are gone.

Freeze for 2 hours or overnight then serve frozen. Once frozen solid, pop any leftover bites intoa bag and keep frozen until ready to use. Best used within a week.

Store any leftover oat mixture in an airtight box to use to make more banana bites or to throw into a homemade smoothie, yum!

I love this idea, so simple and I may be able to swap a few ingredients for what we have in the cupboard as we have been lucky so far with no known allergies in our house and don't have any coconut so I am wondering if ground almonds might work instead of the coconut and maybe some cinnamon. Thanks for another great idea 🙂

Thank you, I don't know where the idea came from to be honest, I do have to avoid dairy most of the time due to allergies in the family, so I that was probably where my train of thought led!

FAQs

How do you freeze bananas for toddlers? ›

Slice into ½-3/4 inch rounds, arrange into a single layer on a parchment lined tray (otherwise it will be much harder to remove the bananas once frozen). Freeze for at least 2 hours. Transfer the frozen slices to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container.

Are frozen bananas a healthy snack? ›

This option is particularly useful if you own a cafe. Many people have concerns about the flavour and consistency of frozen bananas. While it is true that bananas will lose their firmness when thawing takes place, the flavour and nutritional value will remain the same as fresh bananas.

Are frozen bananas good to bake with? ›

Not only do frozen bananas work for baking, but they arguably work better for baking than fresh bananas. Not only does the freezing process not affect the taste or the nutritional value of the bananas, but defrosting bananas makes them softer and therefore easier to mix into batter.

Do I thaw frozen bananas before baking? ›

Freeze Bananas Whole (If Using for Baking)

Can you eat frozen bananas straight from the freezer? ›

How do you keep frozen bananas from turning brown? ›

To prevent the bananas from turning brown in the freezer, make sure to use an airtight container, or freezer-safe plastic bag. Exposure to air is what causes bananas to brown, so as long as they're sealed tightly, you won't have any issues with browning.

Is it better to freeze bananas with or without peel? ›

You can freeze whole, peeled bananas in large plastic bags like smaller banana chunks. You can also freeze bananas whole in their peels, but this will only work if you want mashed bananas. After thawing and peeling a banana frozen in its peel, it will come out of the peel in an essentially mashed texture.

What is the best container to freeze bananas in? ›

Rigid containers (glass jars and hard plastic containers) are especially good for freezing foods with liquid. Covers for rigid containers should fit tightly. Square or rectangular, straight-sided rigid plastic containers make the best use of freezer space.

When should you not use frozen bananas? ›

Do bananas taste the same after being frozen? ›

There are purely practical reasons for freezing bananas - maybe you just didn't get round to eating them all, or maybe there was a great deal at the store so you bought them in bulk - but many people actually prefer the taste of frozen and thawed bananas, which they say have a much sweeter flavour.

Do frozen bananas taste like ice cream? ›

Sure, frozen bananas taste like ice cream (a little), but it's not the same as having a bowl of truly spectacular, real-deal ice cream. If you want luscious, creamy banana ice cream the way your grandmother would have done it—with real cream, eggs, and a touch of sugar—THIS IS THAT RECIPE.

How do you prepare frozen bananas for baking? ›

Can dogs eat bananas? ›

Yes, dogs can eat bananas. In moderation, bananas are a great low-calorie treat for dogs. They're high in potassium, vitamins, biotin, fiber, and copper.
